Marthe Bolda
Des prières sans réponse

01.04  –  04.06

Des prières sans réponse (Unanswered Prayers) is a sound installation by visual artist Marthe Bolda in the Horta Garden of the Bijloke Campus. Five megaphones suspended from trees and a building broadcast Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist prayers.

Reminiscent of the cacophony Malian street vendors create using megaphones, the installation seems to give voice to a dialogue of the deaf. It also evokes the palaver tree of the artist's homeland, Cameroon, around which conflicts are debated and resolved.

As a self-taught artist seeking to "sculpt reality" and to celebrate "the freedom to create, even in destitution," since the late 2000s Marthe Bolda has developed a practice grounded in meeting and dialogue. Her works invite us into an experience of otherness, but also to slow down our daily rhythms.
