KIOSK invites Nina Queissner and Melissa Ryke to create in the exhibition space of the former anatomical theater a collaborative work that reflects on the notion of listening.

For this occasion, the artists will create a site-specific installation exploring the poetic dimension of sound and its transformative potential. In both of their individual practices Queissner and Ryke think through the relational matter of sound, considering its ecological implications and the practice of embodied listening. On a common ground of process-based practice arising out of observing, documenting and transmitting experience - individual works rock up, melt and slide together.

This exhibition project happens in the framework of the collective interview Encounter in Resonance: Is listening an Art? to be held on Friday the 9th of April from 6 to 8 p.m., and is the first result of the collaboration between KIOSK and EPAS, European Postgraduate in Arts in Sound.

Nina Queissner

Nina M. W. Queissner, born in Darmstadt in 1990, has studied Fine Arts and electro-acoustic music in France and in Belgium.

Her practice articulates through installation, video and performance works, as well as sound recording- and design and composition for cinema sound and radio-art.

With the tools of recording technologies and soundscape composition, Nina develops a poetic and research-oriented approach which inquires the experiential dimension of sound and listening in close proximity with multidisciplinary conceptions of landscape and environment.

Her most recent projects, such as The Sound Ecology Series and The third Ear approach the ecological implications of listening. They are enriched through regular exchange with the environmental scientist Florian Schneider who is currently leading research at the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE) in Frankfurt am Main.

Melissa Ryke

Melissa Ryke is an Australian artist currently based in Lille, France and currently undertaking a state-supported studio residency at Le Carré des Artistes. She studied Fine Arts in both Australia and France and has recently completed the European Postgraduate in Art in Sound at KASK, Ghent in June 2020. Ryke's practice-led research focuses on a critical and playful investigation of the quotidian and experimentation with installation and time-based media. Through these mediums the key notion of a bodily experience in space is explored from a phenomenological framework. Recent projects have been focused on embodied listening; listening and recording as a sensorial experience.
